Jennifer Trijo as Musical Director – Shrek The Musical – Adelaide Youth Theatre

“Strongly led by a finely-tuned orchestra under the stewardship of conductor Jennifer Trijo, it is clear that considerable effort has been invested by both musicians and performers alike. Trijo’s debut as a Musical Director is a resounding success.” ~ Alex Bond, The Barefoot Review

I had a memorable experience as Musical Director for the South Australian Premiere of Shrek The Musical. Thank you to Emma Riggs and Kerreane Sarti of Adelaide Youth Theatre for entrusting me with this role. Adelaide boasts a wealth of talented performers, musicians, and creatives. January, 2018 was hard work but I’m so happy that I was a part of this.

I wrote an article titled Shrek The Musical Premieres in SA as part of my Cadenza Notes column on AussieTheatre to sum up my experience working along the incredible cast, creatives, musicians, and crew. I truly love these moments in life where I get to be part of creating something special and share it with others.

The feedback from our patrons was overwhelmingly positive and one of the highlights of the season was a special performance the producers organised where they invited children with special needs and their carers to a performance of the musical.

Thank you to Michael Mills of HeapsGood Productions for this glowing review:

“As always, AYT assembled a fantastic team of performers, technicians, and other creatives, in order to bring the show to life. In a change to their usual casting, there are plenty of older performers involved, which brings a great blend of youth and experience, as well as providing important mentoring opportunities for the younger cast members. Indeed, it has been one of the strengths of AYT over the years that their role has been not just to put on shows, but to help develop it’s young cast. It is for this very reason that we at HeapsGood Productions take great pride in having chosen many of the young performers we work with on a professional basis through AYT.

As Director, Thomas Brodie Phillips took on a great responsibility in seeking to maintain the high standard for which Adelaide Youth Theatre productions have become known. The completeness of the universe in which this version of the show exists is a testament to his vision, and his leadership. It is also a great credit to sublime musical direction of Jennifer Trijo, and the delightfully creative, and wonderful choreography of Shenayde Wilkinson-Sarti. The rest of the crew, from set-design and construction through to stage management, ensure that the team’s vision is unique, believable, and worthy of this great script, and the memories that so many of us have of all things Shrek. In order for all of this to work, though, you need a cast capable of delivering. In this, they do by the swamp load!” ~ Michael Mills, Creative Director, HeapsGood Productions
